I would like to partioning my Linux box with the following partitions: /, /tmp/ /var/ /usr/ usr/local, and /home.
My question is this: after I have established these partitions, will Linux intall to these various partitions automatically or will I have to intervene in order to get the various components of Linux into the correct partitions?
depends on the distro your using, I pre-formatted my partitions with partition magic, and upon the installing Slackware, the installer just asked where I wanted everything to be mounted/installed. IE....../dev/hda5, /dev/hda7, /dev/hdb4 ....etc.
If you do use a partition tool, you will have to create those partitions with a file system (ext2, ext3, JFS, etc) that is supported by your distribution.
I suggest you free up the space and use your distribution's installer to partition everything.
