linux OS on usbpen

I have used Small Damn Linux but in todays day and age you can buy usbpens cheap with a lot of disk space. With that being said can I just actually load linux(a shaved down version) onto a usbpen and then add utilities that I need as I go. App cannot be simply added the DLS and was wondering if I could just load linux on a usbdisk and bam I am ready to go?

I think slax www.slax.org allows you to install it on usb and add "modules" on it ..
