Question linux on x86, any way to maintain state to avoid boot?

Hi all,

I know the subject was sort of confusing, but what I mean is, if I have a micro atx motherboard, flash card ide interface and normal sdram, is it possible to maintain state on it so it can be turned on similar to how a palm pilot or yopy is? sort of like a reliable suspend-to-disk feature, so that as long as the machine is plugged in, turning it on and off is not something to wait 30-60 sec. for

TIA

B.
