Linux on iPod 4G?
i finally got my hands on a 20Gb apple iPod+HP, im so happy with it but i've heard good things about linux on iPods recently and am looking for a distro to try on my iPod. So far, I've messed up the operating sistem by trying to install uClinux from ipolinux.org, can anyone recomend another OS?
preferably with a dualboot? while im at it, is there anything that will re-update the mac firmware for a PC formatted ipod from a mac? >.< my first question is more important _____________________ thanks for any help |

Obviously, you'll lose all your music and settings. |
you cant run linux on the 4th generatin ipod yet (thats the one with just the click wheel ) it's not the same cpu as th 3rd gen. are you wanting to run linux on the ipod or have the ipod work with a linux computer
there are only 2 ways (from apple) to update the firmware one for mac and one for pc. if you update it from a mac it will format it hfs+. you can dd the firmware to you harddisk then format it fat32 and dd it back. But the hfs+ ipods work fine in linux mine is used with both linux and mac at the same time. |
Does anyone know about getting open source software with ogg vorbis codecs on the ipod? I was told about it a while ago and gaven a website.

www.rockbox.org
It's not Linux based, but it's open source, and supports a number of codecs including ogg. It'ss generally just a really mature interface...I prefer it to the Apple firmware. There is a Linux distribution for the iPod available, and it's a facinating proof of concept, but it's media playback abilities arn't nearly as far along,. |
