Unhappy Linux Newbie here! Apache Setup Question

Hello,
I'm very new to linux. Just started running it to get away from all the MS Crap. Anyway, I've got SuSe 9.1 installed and running. I'm trying to Setup Apache. Thru a program called YaST I installed and Enbabled Apache. Created a simple text only web page and put it in /srv/www/htdocs like the admin guide said to do. In YaST made sure the document root pointed to that file.

When I open a web browser and go to the ip address of the linux box I get a connection refused error? What have I done wrong?

Also, are the any easy to understand Apache tutorials for Beginners?

Thanks
Mark

Where are you "open a web browser and go to the ip address of the linux box" from? Are you doing this from another computer or the same linux box? On the linux box, have you tried: http://localhost/ ?

Is apache running? do a /etc/init.d/apache2 status to see if apache is running.

I tired to access it from both local and a remote machine, and I tried http://localhost as well with the same result.

when I type /etc/init.d/apache2 status it says "no such file or directory"

I looked around under /etc and found a apache2 directory. i tried typing /etc/apache2 status and this time got "apache2 is a directory" or something to that effect.

Thanks a million for your help!!

Mark

Actually, in 9.1, you can go through yast and see what's running. Open up yast, and go to System >> Runlevel Editor then click on "Expert Mode". You should be able to scroll down and see if apache is running.

Assuming that you installed Apache from the Suse disk/ftp, you you shouldn't have had to do anything with the config because (if I'm not mistaken) it's already setup for general/generic usage...if you wanted to do something exotic, then you would have to mess with the httpd.conf file, but I think right out of the box, if the service is running, it should work with no setup.

PS: Don't go turning on and off stuff in the runlevel editor unless you know what exactly what it does...you could very well mess something up.

Got it running

Thanks. Went in the runlevel editor and the service was running. I stopped it and started it back up, but it wouldn't start. Got a error that said "root dirctory must be a directory"

Sure enought, when I added that file "index.html" I put it in the document root.

Works like a champ.

Thanks for all your help guys!

Mark
