Linux makes CDrom slow

When I'm installing the first disc of Mandrake 8.2, for the first 5 minutes or so, the drive will be copying at "full speed" but then the drive will spin down and the installation complete time goes to 2 and a half hours. Eventually after the 1st CD is finished, I insert the 2nd CD and the drive spins back up and stays sped up.

This may just be a hardware problem and have nothing to do with linux, I dunno. The drive in question is a Creative 5x DVD drive about 2 years old.

Can the diodes in the drive go bad over time?

This is ok. Nothing wrong with the cd or cdrom. but its better if you change the cdrom.

I don't know if there's anything tremendously wrong with it. My Aopen DVD does a similar thing. Apparently I have a DVD drive that is 40xCD, yet it reads my CDs much slower than my CDburner that is also 40x. However, it does read my DVDs blindingly fast (well, it's a 10x but it's faster than I had originally expected ). If you have a second CD drive, then you could try using that instead.

I decided I would try linux install with my CDR (4x burn and 8x read), it took an hour but I can live with that for now. I will probably get the fastest plextor soon, that way I'll have a fast burner and a reader. I really have no use for this DVD drive anymore anyhow...
