I've tried smartpost. Its very easy to install and it uses xmail as MTA. Visit http://smartpost.sourceforge.net. I believe that some of the packages are in rpm. You can convert it using alien or try downloading the packages in synaptic and unpack the smartpost file.

I've already seen many posts that ask similar questions than yours.
For mail servers, postfix and qmail often come up, if I'm not mistaken.
But there are many alternatives, like Exim and Meark.

I wouldn't advise you to use sendmail itself, since it can be a little hard to configure without
proper instructions. Postfix and qmail are a lot easier.

Okay. To start, I did it in Red Hat 9 so I think it will be easier to teach you on the same distro. If you're using debian, I think it will not be difficult for you to download all the packages necessary since debian already has a repository. All you have to do is to unpack every packages listed in smartposts' website. To make it easier, you can setup RH9 for your mail server and have a good firewall for your security (since RH9 is running under a old kernel). I can send you a screen recording on how I did it in RH9. YOu can easily setup the mail server in just 20 minutes. What I like about Xmail is that its easy to configure and there are available resources in the web. You can also add some spam protection and anti virus.

Try looking on:
http://www.rpmfind.net
http://www.freshmeat.org/

But your RedHat 7 is quite old, so you may not get a version of the packages for your distro.

For exim, you can also go to:
http://www.exim.org

Haven't found any sign of the Meark stuff you mentioned.

Postfix is on http://www.postfix.org
Qmail is on http://www.qmail.org
