Linux mail client for exchange?
 

I'm looking for a mail client to access my Exchange Server. Access is easy, but deleting mail on the server seems to be a problem.

I've tried Kontact and Evolution. The problem is if I delete mail on the client they are still on the server. Kind of defeats the purpose of a mail server you can access anywhere, heh? :)

I didn't set up the OWA stuff on the exchange server, tho. Is there any other way?

Usually email clients can be configured to delete mail on the server after downloading. Have you checked your settings?

Oh, I definitely don't want that. I don't want to download the mail. I want the mail to stay on the exchange server.

With outlook nothing is downloaded. And if I delete or change anything in outlook, the changes are saved on the server.

Anyone else find a Linux mail client that can access mail on an Exchange Server without downloading and with two way communication?

You need to restate your question. It looks to me that macemoneta answered your original question, but your response seemed to indicate something totally different. I don't think your post is being understood as you intended it.

My mail is stored on my Exchange Server. If I use Outlook to access this mail, I can read my messages and delete the ones I don't want to save.

But I'm not deleting my mail locally, it's being deleted on the server. This way I can access the mail server thru another client and see the same messages.

I can't get Kontact or Evolution to do this. Changes I make to mail while in Kontact are not reflected on the server.

As far as I know, only Outlook can use the Exchange stored email. When I worked for a large corporation, we went through a migration - moving email from the Exchange store to user's PCs (downloading email). Our IT staff indicated the store didn't scale. If your company is small enough to not be experiencing a problem with centrally stored email, then the only way I know to access it is via Outlook.

You can consider using Outlook under WINE. Crossover simplifies the installation.

what you are looking for is some client that can selectively, or mark emails to be deleted on (exchange) server.

eudora can do this but it has 3 problems
1 is not a real problem: it downloads to local and keeps the server copy
2 it does not run linux
3 it is now stopped

allow me to suggest vmware workstation if you opt to use outlook or eudora in windows in linux host

I am using Evolution 2.0.2 to connect to an exchange server and I don't have any issues with it other than an occasional snag with the global address list.

Evolution seems to almost work. Do you know if your mail stays on the server, yet you can delete it from the client?

Unfortunately an Evolution server seems to cost as much as Exchange. I want to get something going where I can have backup servers without paying extra licensing fees.

Thunderbird seems to be working, but I can't tell how the process works where it syncs up the mail headers deleted on the client with the mail on Exchange.

This is becoming more critical, as I want to put something in place that could replace my exchange server if needed.

But it's not that critical, this is for home. :)

Well, I figured out thunderbird. You have to compress folders, in File, to delete stuff on the Exchange Server.

However, Thunderbird won't access the contacts on the Exchange Server. So my plan is to move to Evolution. Eventually then I hope to replace MS Exchange with http://opengroupware.org/.
