Linux in vague won't record audio. Help.

running rh9 on a celeron 533 w/298 ram w/ an essolo1 onboard audio card, newest stable linux kernal. in KDE, khdrecord won't record, audacity freaks out cause of kde or gnome, when I shut their sound off, audacity doesn't freak out but crashes, and plain old sound recorder doesn't work either. successfully got xine to play dvds better than windoze, play mpegs, avi's, zapping works, live365, all audio video playing works, but recording freaks it out. soundrecorder just freezes, khdrecord just acts and doesn't do anything. This is like the last hurdle for me being totally linux, as the only other thing I go back to xp for is games...ohyeah, ALSA is on the system but barely works and I don't have a recording program that uses it. thanks,c.
