linux hotkey


I know Linux has a hotkey to show the old command , for example , if I type the word "per" on the shell then press the hotkey , it will show the command "perl Makefile.PL" which I hv used previously , what is this hotkey ? thx

I know that with Bash, you have to first type <Ctrl + r> to enter the search mode. There may be easier ways with other shells, though.
