Linux Games

So I just installed Linux on my up to date computer, and installed Unreal Tournament 2003, and WOW! Everything runs so much faster, even with Hungry Hungry KDE. I get like 15FPS more, without even killing all my background apps. I was wondering if there were any free Linux games you guys could recommend. 3D stuff. I had heard that Quake 3 has a free linux version, true? and Duke Nukem 3D was just opened up, so there will be a linux version for that i assume. Thanks for any recommendations.

Im going to install fluxbox and see if my performance increases at all, since fluxbox is obviously lighter than KDE.

The only thing free Quake 3 related is the demo, and the point releases. The game itself is not free. But you do not need to buy a new Quake 3 CD to install it on Linux. All you need to do is to make a directory in /usr/local/games named quake3 then create a sub dir within the directory you created, and name it baseq3. Copy the PAK0.PK3 file to the baseq3 folder (and make sure it gets renamed to a lowercase (pak0.pk3)), download the 1.32B Point Release from Id's FTP server. Once you have done that, as root type in sh linuxq3a1.32b.x86.run in a terminal emulater. And you should be able to install the Point Release to play Quake 3 on Linux.

Yes, if you do not have the whole game, you can buy it. I don't know what the other guy meant by 'but'. ;)

I don't think it's a good idea to run any version of Quake 3 on Linux. Id has confessed to multiple backdoors and poor judgement. If you're curious, check out http://www.insecure.org. They have a list of known Quake 3 exploits along with nmap, a very cool utility.

Have Fun
