linux frustrations.. help please!

Hey all! I still can't get linux to compile my tulip.c drivers. I can't login as root either! I have mandrake setup to boot into my user level account by default. When I log off and try to log on as root, it takes my password, shows the blue background, and stops. it was like this from the day I installed it! I can go in under failsafe, But seeing I don't know the commands, I am kinda over a stump there.. Once I get this taken care of, I would like to install wine (?) that came with mandrake 7.2 (? did it?) I can't seem to get linux running! I like it, and would replace windows with linux, But the only problem is that I need windows to connect to the wonderful world of WWW... hahaha..

Whell, Thankyou all!

yep.. I tried the tulip driver that came with my distro, just installing pci-scan and it appeared to work.. When I went to fire up netscrape, it wouldn't launch, and now the system hangs at the grey screen when starting X windows.. ahh! Just when I got everything niced up too!

Whell, thanx!
