Linux for GAMING!!!!! Can it be done?? WineX??
 

Okay everyone, we all know that there is still one question lurking in the back of everyone's minds at this point... Can Linux function as a proper gaming OS?

I have heard rumors about the supposed 'wondrous capabilities' of such Windows emulators as WineX and other Wine distributions. Yet, all I have read about so far are the fiery wrecks of past installations gone bad.

Has anyone actually built a successful Linux/Wine combination that can handle the demands of today's gaming innoventions? If so, please share your setup with me (us) so that we too may replicate and enjoy that fruit which you have already tasted!

Specifically, I am looking to run games built on DirectX technology (Warcraft 2 and 3, Star Craft, Diablo, etc...). Anyone know the best Linux distribution and/or Wine distribution to use (preferrably FREE)????

I got Starcraft working but I didn't try the other games that you listed. Battlenet doesn't work though. Since I bought VMWARE and deleted WINE, I don't have to worry about running a Windows OS emulation program like WINE. VMWARE doesn't support 3D rendering, so it is limited to directdraw games.

If you using WINE, make sure you compile it for opengl support. Also look for other options you can add to the ./configure.

BTW, always have a backup of your wine.conf file. Like Windows, WINE gets corrupted.

The best is ,

Play Windows games on Windows.
Play Linux games on Linux.

No problem at all.

start a new thread with your problem, cause DOD has a 95% working status with wine, so its really not all that hard, are did you even try installing it?

as in what version of Wine are you talking about??? There are many different versions with different strengths/weaknesses. Thanks.

Hey, also, does anyone know where I can get a FREE download of WineX??? The Transgamers website (http://www.transgaming.com/) wants you to subscribe... I'm not down with that. Thanks!

?!!?...i am only stating that i use wine and i use a windows based game and i am happy that it works in linux...i am not the one having a problem thats why i didn't express the version, etc...

as of winex, search this fourm, by typing "winex free" or something along the lines and you'll notice that i hat i've responded to a few threads giving them like 3 or 4 links or ideas on how to go about getting it free.

I got Starcraft running beautifully under Mandrake 9.1 with wine, but only after I installed Xwine (sort of gui to wine(X)).
I installed it under windows and it runs on my windows partition with the tempdir in my homedir (normal user, NO ROOT!). I would be happy to send anyone the config files and version numbers, provided you tel me where they are supposed to be (never really cared, just tinkering with wine and xwine).

WineX is a great product. It's still much to be done, but I'm happy with it. If you can afford the paid versions, it's a good thing to do. You get support, access to the forums, can suggest a game to be supported, you can get pre-compiled versions and the possibility to donwload updgrades or older versions of the product and the best is, you know you are paying for a good cause. How many times have you ever paid for a program for Linux?. Besides, the price is about a Big Mac with company which you should pay for a girl in a Saturday who probably don't even deserve it :). Also, programmers and developers also need to eat you know ;). And it's nice of them to give a free version of WineX thru CVS ;).

Ahhh, but that's not a fair test. It's a pretty old version of WineX... And the guys describes really poor how he is doing the performance test. If he is running as DirectX, the frame rate is normal, because WineX has to first convert the DirectX to OpenGL, which is the Linux native video libraries. So... games which has support for OpenGL should run very well under WineX...
Also, if you cannot get WineX to do anything you could give the problems you are having so we can give some support...
