Linux For Dummies
 

Hello Everyone,

I am new to anything that has to do with Linux at all so hence the title, Linux for dummies... Let me try to get to the point. I personally have always been a windows user. I am still a windows user. Sorry. My mother however has a Linux based PC and she has SUSE 3.2.2 I believe and her browser is Mozilla. Now we live hundreds of miles from one another so I can't just go over and fix her PC. She tells me it is starting to slow down and run slow on her and she has a few other problems as well. Now on my Windows based PC I can go into Internet Explorer and clean out temp files and I also have the defrag program built into XP and disk cleanup program that helps clean alot of background junk out of my PC from time to time so it runs right.

So to get to my question or questions, On this version of Linux called SUSE my mother is using and with the browser Mozilla what types of things can I tell her to do or what programs are there with that system that she can try to cleanup background stuff and temp files and similar to what I explained with the XP stuff to get her computer smooth again? I know some of you guru's will be able to help and any step by step or common sense stuff you can relay to me so I can relay to her in this process would be greatly appreciated.

Firstly - if she is using Mozilla/Netscape - she can go to Edit>Options and clear the cache.
You cannot defrag a linux filesystem - it does not fragment.

actually, your mum has made the right choice, there is no spyware for linux. you should have a go yourself. :D

Yeah, clearing the cache should be the way to go.

Another thing that i would do is update to suse 9.3

Im Anthony's mom,how do I find where Edit>options is located at?

it is in your web browser at the top edit then go down to options.

You should edit your post to remove your email address to prevent bots from harvesting it. We can send you email through LQ if it is needed.

It's Anthony's mom again.I think I may have a different type of Linux Suse 3.0 than what you all are telling me to do.My system has it built right in.There is no software I put in,it's already installed.None of the places you have told me to go to are there,or maybe Im not looking in the right place.And on my browser it has a lot of Netscape,Internet Explorer,Opera & Safari.IN simple terms I don't understand this system or how it operates at all,& I need step by step easy to understand instructions on how to get to something to operate it.And so far Im lost.If anyone thinks they can help me I sure would appreciate it:) But in very simple terms as Im an idiot:newbie: :D

It's me again:) I had one more question,can you ell me if on my system do i need software to be able to get Kopete or can it be gotten to without it.If I can get Kopete without software can some one give me step by step instructions on how to get it up & running in my system:confused: Starting with where do I go how do i put it in,how do i activate it etc etc.Thanks for ya alls help I sure appreciate it.:D

or it might be called preferences... you never know, on a windows computer it's under the tools menu, called options, some linux computers I have used called it preferences (under the edit menu)

and yeah, remove the email... the bots will get you, and get you bad! it's the edit button the bottom right side of your post.
