ok
i got the xvidcap rpm form sourceforge and did a --nodeps install
xvidcap ran but wouldnt save to a video file
i then had to mess around getting libffmpeg installed
once this was installed and i hacked the ~/.xvidcap.scf as per these instructions
http://www.dennisgdaniels.com/tiki-i...p?page=xvidcap
i got a playback
there is a smal crosshair button on the xvidcap toolbar
click on this then on either any open window or the desktop itself, the capture area automatically resizes itself to the chosen window size or to the entire desktop area size
quality and compression rate are settable via the .scf file
one note:
after closing the program down I had 2 commands running at 49% and 51%, these did not show up in kdesystem guard but appeared when i used "top" and shutdown with the kill command
