Linux equivalent to Windows key codes

In Windows, you can push Alt-### and get special characters. is there an equivalent key function in Linux?

The alt+keypad gives access to the extended (ansi) characters.

Linux doesn't use them. Instead, we use unicode, which supports a much wider range of characters.

This article, though out of date (linux has unparalleled international language support), has a neat section on entering extended (latin) characters:
Quote:

You can enter extended Latin characters from the keyboard in three ways: deadkeys, the Compose and AltGr key, and the Multi_key -- all of which we'll explain in a moment. Which you have, and how functional each one is, depends on the hardware and software details of your system.
... sound like you?

That's exactly what I wanted. Thanks!
