Linux DRM Converter? (By the way this is not spam, it's a real question.)
 

I had bought some music, about 12 songs, from Yahoo a few months before they stopped using DRM some years ago.

This is not a major issue, if I have to I will find the same music files elsewhere and hold onto to this to prove that I actually bought them at full price. But I would like to (or try to) convert these DRM files to something I can actually play. Any ideas?

In my country it is illegal to actively break any copy-protection. Simplest way would be: Play them and record them back. I have never done it, but I think it shouldn't be a big issue.

Problem I am having is I no longer buy music from Yahoo and they can't help me, (I bough them in 2006.) So I can't actually play any of them. DRM is such a pain. That is one thing I strongly disagree with. If one pays for it with their own money then that is that. Amazing, but that's the way it is these days.

Do you only can not play them on Linux or on any OS? If you need Windows, may be because you have to use a special player then get the 90-days trial-version of Windows 7 Enterprise and install it in Virtualbox. Then play the music and record it with for example Audacity or something similar.

I couldn't play it on Windows XP or Vista. I had XP at the time I purchased the music and then I had to reinstalled XP. That's when I really learned what DRM was like. I guess it installed the license information in Windows Media Player, which I lost it all when I reinstalled. Yahoo said they where unable to give me back the information, maybe because they thought I would buy it again if they refused me. Not sure. That of course was the very last time I bought anything from Yahoo. I switched over to Emusic at that point. They sold you actual mp3's.

I am going to mark this thread as solved. Though it is no wonder piracy is popular. When you buy something and it really isn't yours people get tired of it. Not that I am saying it is a good thing either way, just the way things are. I am only glad I have 12 and not many more like some have had to deal with. I think I am just going to stick with emusic and just count this as a loss. Thanks for the tossing some ideas my way TobiSGD.

I don't have Windows on my computer anymore. But I think I will install XP on a Virtual Machine to have around for little things like this. Unless this works with Wine which I will try first.

Ok I tried the .exe with wine and it didn't worked. I checked aptitude and there was a linux version. I will edit this file with the results for future reference for others.


Edit: I am running into issues after researching it. However I also found some other interesting things so I can't really post any more at this point. Lets just say I am never, EVER using Windows again. The way they tie peoples hands is amazing. DRM is also something I will continue NEVER to use. And since this is at the LQ forums I will say that the information or leads to information I obtained here is used legally.
