Well that sucks, I just ran cdrecord -scanbus and got a similar problem. I have not burned cd's in a while but I do have k3b and stuff. Looks like an issue with the 2.6.8.1 kernels I presume. No time to look into mine now but when I fix it I'll try and post a solution if you have not already Here is the output from mine with a little bit more info.

Well after seeing this I decided to burn a cd and depsite the claims from the output above I was able to burn a cd sucessfully with k3b. So I guess maybe it's not the kernel with your issue.
