Linux Crashed Could not get # or $ prompt

Hi a very strange thing I faced recently

My linux box just will not give me a # or $ prompt it use to logon fine with
the username and password and also gave me last login details but will
not give me any of the following prompts.

[root@server1 root]#
or
[d14014@server1 d14014]$

prompt

So I could not do anything in that case

All I did was a restart from the hardware that rebooted the linux box and now was able to get to the prompt

Very strange all I could say is that the server was up and running with a
DHCP server, DNS server, and NFS server over the network.

Does any one know what might have happened.

Any one has faced such a problem?

sometimes there are just booboos. i can't really tell what you are talking about happened or what happened to cause it. but sometimes, when i get rough with my system, she gets mad and bites back with no prompt, but it is cause of something i did, so i just hit ctrl+c to kill the last command and all usualy works again. so. maybe that is what happened. sometimes the system has a mind of its own, or is thinking, or is not wanting to think. doesnt necissarily mean you got hacked, if that is what you are thinking.
