Linux crashed

My Fedora1 crashed this morning.
It keeps asking me to repair system or ControlD.
What's happening, how do I repair?
I have tried last four kernel versions.
Please bear with me - new to linux
Many thanks

boot from from the rescue cd and check the filesystem.
the control-d thing is for logging in as root and checking the filesystem as root.
if your filesystem is ext2 or ext3, you can
give root password
e2fsck /dev/<whateveritis>
if you fix evereything then
mount -o remount,rw /
telinit 3

results will vary.
