Originally posted by DJ Cacophony I had a similar problem with my nvidia card and suse. The problem was that it wouldn't let me use my real resolution. Then I spent 5 minutes reading the nvidia driver documentation and got it fixed in the same amount of time.
Whereas I spent days doing everything up to and including buying a new graphics card and it still never worked properly. Slack, though went straight on and the nvidia driver was installed in minutes. It was a Ti4200 (I think) and a MX4000. The Unichrome onboard NEVER worked in SuSe. I've no doubt that it could be made to work but it was quicker to chnage distros :-)

thanks ill look into them. currently getting ALL 14 CDs downloaded and burned for Debian.. to be blunt the distro means next to nothing to me as long as it works. im still new enough to linux that i am not so one distro over an other.
i have liked the RH line (not the FC line though) of distros as that was the first linux distro i touched years ago and is the ONLY distro i can get running properly on my laptop right out of the box so to speak. RH9, MDK10 was extreemly slow and buggy on my laptop not to mention when i finnaly got the updater to work, took almost 2 weeks to connect, it fried the OS to the point i was unable to recover and just formatted and pur RH9 back on.
that is my limited experiance with distros and why i refuse to deal with MDK again.
My God, they are going insane. That is just waste. Get the first and download the applications you need as you go along, or if you have a good connection and a good processor, try gentoo.
By the time you get all 14 cd downloaded the applications are already old as new version of the programs come out quite fast.
It's like slack, they keep adding more cd's and I only get the first one. And I download as I go.

Slack 10 only runs to 3 CDs max and I've never needed the 3rd one. First two do a full install with most goodies I need and a lot that i don't.
Originally posted by cadj i really dont understand why people think debian is hard (or harder) to set up, just because it dosent use a mouse on the install process.
the only config file i needed to touch (and i still didnt NEED to) was the /etc/fstab
my ethernet was automaticly configured to dhcp, apt-get install x-window-system had a configuration menu,
debian is by far the easiest distro to use,
apt-get install kde
apt-get install xmms
apt-get install mozilla
its that easy
I keep meaning to get debian and have a play but never quite get around to it. One day I'm sure I will.

apt-get install mozilla
well all of those are already fully installed but mplayer is not available via apt-get...
fyi it should read:
apt-get install mozilla-browser
that was a msg i got from the CLI when attempting to follow your instructions. when i ran my line, i got the msg stating that it was installed and the latest vs. so im set, if i can ever get the blasted display to work properly. it is only accespting 640x320 or 800x600, not acceptable IMHO, not for my hardware. i should be able to push that out to at least 1280x1024 as that is the standard desktop i use for windows.
