Hi guys! I am trying to learn the basics of Linux and I am having a few problems newtworking my RedHat 8 box with my WinXP box.

Does anyone know of a very detailed How To for Samba (I think that is the program that should be used?)

First make sure it's installed properly, should be if it came with RH8, now you need to to configure it by editing the ex. /etc/samba/smb.conf, you probobly should use a frontend to do this if your "new". I suggest gnosamba this site should have some rpms for you http://ftp.falsehope.com/pub/gnosamba/
Make sure the security option is set to "share" or you wont be able to access the shares from win32.
Next you haveto check if it works and mount the shares to access them, here i suggest LinNeighborhood http://www.bnro.de/~schmidjo/ a nice share browsing prog, but im sure RH8 has something for this.

and you shuld be all set...

Thanks for the reply! I guess I have one other TOTAL NEWBIE question.... I don't know if this is the same on other distro's...but in Red Hat I can just right click and open a previoulsy downloaded RPM file. Then Red Hat will install the RPM automaticly. However, once it is installed I don't know how to start the program.

For example...the program you mentioned above... It is installed (so Red Hat says) but how do I run the program if I don't know the path?

Once it is installed the executables are put into /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin depending on configuration, these paths are recognized systemwide there fore any executable placed in these paths are executable from enywhere.
ex. open a terminal "Eterm" is nice and just type in gnosamba, or LinNeighborhood, remeber *nix is case sensative. The command witll be completed for you auto if you hit the TAB key while typing it like gnos[TAB] will print gnosamba in your terminal
Or if you want to know the path just type "whereis programname" and tux will tell you where the exe is, this ofcourse assuming RH has the whereis command.

Look into SWAT or Webmin. Nice GUI interfaces that you use via your browser. Try Googling for them. They might come w/ Redhat, I don't know. LinNeighbohood is also useful

There's quite a bit into configuring Samba but here's another tip. I setup my Samba box as a WINS server, configured my Windows boxes accordingly and also added a static entry for my Samba box in the Windows boxe's hosts files. The new Redhat beta has a Redhat GUI Samba tool. Good luck! If you search these forums, you will see I went through quite a bit of trouble setting up Samba. Joining the Samba maiing list and buying a Samba book got my box up and running. Now my Samba box handles printing, network time server, and shared network drives.
