Hey there happy Linux Users, I am having a problem that is really pissing me off...I have installed RH Linux 7.0 5 times now with no luck. The first time I installed RH Linux 7.0 it worked fine with no boot errors, alas I had to change my partitions & when Linux goes through it's boot sequence now I get a

"Oops! Gpm (967) error your xxxx has been murdered unexspectantly"

Then my Monitor flashes about 3-4 times & the same message appears on the screen...repeatly...I am about to throw this Linux crap in the bin & go back to Windows ME, but I know the mood I am in now is not helping my judgement :)


Could you please help me with this problem, I cannot even break into the command prompt to even try & edit any conf files to try & fix whatever is causing it because my Monitor keeps on flickering...

If your booting with LILO, try typing in at LILO prompt:

LILO: Linux 1

This will boot Linux into single user mode straight to bash shell prompt. Then from there you should be able to edit any files or check any log files.

I usedthe Linux 1 boot command wiht success & used the setup program in RH Linux to re-configure my xf86config file, alas I still get this error while it tries to boot into the xwindow:

/var/run/gdm.pid, gdm is already running but seemed to be murdered mysteriously.

Above is the exact error code I recieve each time I try to load up RH Linux 7.0....If you could please provide a solution I would be most grateful..

This problem is different from the one you told about the first time GPM. Gpm is a mouse utility for console mode, not in X.
The program GDM though is a program to handle the graphical login screens. I got that message yesterday when I was messing with X and got confused. In my case show to be a missconfiguration in the XF86Config file, I had changed my pointers section so there was an entry that X didn't recognize.

Do you come to the graphical login or are you presented with the console login?
In case of console login, try to login as root and then run
# X
or
# startx
What happens and are there any error messages?

I wish I could get that far, alas when it trys to go into the graphical interface @ boot, my screen flashes constantly & I do not have long enough between screen flashes to go into the root & re-config my xf86conf file...All was not lost when I booted using the Linux 1 command with my Linux boot disk. I accesses the main text prompt & typed in "setup" to re-configure my mouse pointers, monitor e.t.c.

When I re-booted in normal runlevel: 5 mode (going striaght into graphical xwindows mode) the same error accoured..

It seemed even when I tried to re-configure my mouse e.t.c. it had no effect, thinking I already have gdm process ID already running it keeps on murdering the start process..

Try changing boot mode to 3, console. (id:3:initdefault in /etc/inittab). Reboot.
Then from here try startx. Does it start or give error messages?

Dont boot into Runlevel if you are having trouble
 

Boot your system into single user mode as you did before.
Edit /etc/inittab so that your default mode is 3.
Reboot.
Run Xconfigurator and choose some very conservative settings for X, like 640x480 and 8 bit color. If that tests okay, then you should be able to type 'startx'. You will then either get a successful Xwindows session or errors logged to the screen that you can send us.
If it does start successfully, then you can run Xconfigurator a few more times, increasing the resolution and colors till you reach your limit. But don't go back to Runlevel 5 as the default until you get it like you want it.
