Linux blender 2.49b learning

Linux blender 2.49b learning

Attaching screen shots:

(1) 1st screen as blender starts. No one seems to start with it.
(2) Some menus pop up when Space key pressed,
(3) Enlarged view of the menus

What could be the first thing to do after that ?

It is on a laptop, OS is Linux Fedora 14, uname -a gives

Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.35.14-96.fc14.i686 #1 SMP Thu Sep 1 12:49:38 UTC 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

DO NOT !!!!
use the old blender 2.49 to learn on !!!

blender made drastic changes to blender
so drastic that the old plugins for the 2.4 series WILL NOT work in the new API in the current Blender 2.66

now
you can install 2.49b side by side with the current Blender2.66
( this is what i do )

Also
Fedora 14 ?
that is a unsupported version
it went END OF LIFE on "2011-12-08"
it has NOT received any security updates in over 1 year -- not good
( you would not use a MS windows machine that has NOT had security fixes installed for over a year , so please do not use a version of fedora that is UNPATCHED !)
Please stay current and install the current version of Fedora Fedora 18
