I've never done anything with Beowulf clustering--it's all very experimental and meant for hardcore software experimenters.

If you're not so hardcore, you may be interested in OpenMosix to at least get your feet wet in cluster computing. OpenMosix is great because plain old applications will work on it. Basically, it works by migrating threads from one computer to another in the cluster. It attempts to load balance the nodes in the cluster.

I've played a little bit with ClusterKnoppix. It's a liveCD so you don't even need to install anything on the hard drive to try out cluster computing!
