Linux based via BGAN

Looking to have a BGAN terminal but as we all know the airtime cost of this thing, I am thinking of a Linux based OS (Ubuntu?) and use lynx as browser to save up costs on occasional browsing.

Is this something you can recommend or have done before? Also, was wondering if there is a tool in linux I can use to simulate browsing thru different speeds like 56K,256,384,1MB and also check how much bandwidth is being used by the site. This is a good know how so in case, I would know estimatedd how much bandwidth it takes to download a specific site or how long it takes on a given speed.
