Linux-based Home Sound Recording Studio
Hello All,
I am interested in setting up a Linux-based Home Sound Recording Studio...just so I can record myself/guitar and slap it on top of a CD. Have any of you done this, or have an idea where I can get tips to begin walking in the right direction? |

Yeah, I've been wanting to do the same thing but haven't yet researched it. I'll look around the web a bit and see what I can come up with.

OK, I've looked around a bit an have now installed: Audacity.
You can get it at: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ or if you've got SuSE 8.1 pro, you can install directly from the CDs. I've tried the demo, and it rocks! Now, let's see what I can do with it...but any comments or tips would be great! |
This is very cool and I'm really interested in how it all works out for you. Please keep in touch and let me know. I have a laptop that I think would be perfect for home recording but I'd need to get a real good soundcard.

OK, I wanted to wait a couple of days before saying that Audacity is working fiiiiine! I don't know what some of you might have in mind, but for me it was exactly what I was looking for!!
Up to now, I can record myself and a guitar in seperate stereo or mono channels, and am now busy with the editing process of a track...that's a bit tricky though. The installation, was a breeze. The microphone configuration took longer, given that I didn't now that what is referred to as a "mixer" or "xmixer", was for Linux users "kmix"....not that I knew what kmix was before either, but now I know that you need to tweak this in order for the mic to work....and that was it! Anyways, highly recommended...all thumbs up from me! PS: The link for Audacity software is somewhere in the threads above... |

Hey vous, I just shot you an e-mail, but I washoping maybe someone else could help me out here, or I'll start another thread I guess.
Anyway- I've got audacity already installd on my distro, (A Knoppix 3.2 harddrive install, which is basically Debian woody) Anyway, it records fine, but when I go to lay a second track, i can't hear what's been previously recorded. I went to edit the options to enable it, however I can't change anything- it tells me I have an invalid sound device setting (/dev/dsp ) which is correct, as far as I know-- that's what everything else is set to use, and It will record one track with this setting. Now, anyone think of a way to help? I tried changing the permissions to /dev/dsp with chmod +rwx /dev/dsp , but no luck. Thanks- Shade |
Looking for audacity help
I have tried searches for help in other areas, but no luck. So...maybe someone here could shed some light on my problem. I am trying to get a recording application working, I have given up on KRec for the time, and just this morning downloaded Audacity from www.rpmfind.net, the install seemed to work , no errors anyway. Yet, when I start audacity I get a "Host Error" and thats it. It will not start. I have other sound applications working great, so my hardware is not the issue, and if I switch over to windows2k- I have a dual boot system configured for the time being- I can record just fine. I have searched for any reference to this error, but without success. I am running Mandrake Linux 9.1 distribution. (It does puzzle me also that KRec will not work, it seems a simple program and it will at least start but will not recognize any input. ARTS is configured correctly as well as my audio mixer. ) If anyone has encountered this problem with audacity and has the solution, please let me know. I have wondered, but am at work now so I cant try it, if maybe the ARTS sound server is the problem with audacity. Please, any audacity gurus out there, I need help!!!

audacity problem resolved
success! shutting down arts server before using audacity resolved the issue. maybe this will help someone else.

I get the "Host Error" on audacity startup when another app is locking my OSS sound device.
