linux backup software

i have redhat 8.0 on a file server in my office. i have a quantum 35/70 tape device inside the server. i would like to backup some of the directories on the server.

i am looking for good backup software for linux redhat 8.0. does anybody know of any out there? it doesnt matter whether it is free or not, i wont mind buying software if it is worth it. thanks for your help.

Use "tar" - that's what its there for.

i have a problem getting tar to write to the tape device, i would like software that does everything for me

Well if you want to create a image once you could take a look at dump. Man dump for more details :-)

Taper maybe?
Tar should work with the tape drive if there is a device node for it. /dev/st0 for rewind dev /dev/nst0 for non-rewind.
