DVDShrink "clone" for Linux kind of sucks
 

Well, it is getting tiresome to see that the Windows version of DVD Shrink fails to work properly using WINE. I have installed the latest WINE version, 0.9.38)and DVD Shrink opens and analyses the DVD. So far so good. But then any action with the mouse on the GUI or just wait a little, DVD Shrink just closes (crashes?) without warning nor errors. So here I go with the Linux DVDShrink clone (which only the name is cloned, actually). This little piece of software runs in Konsole (there is no GUI afaik ?). However, it produced only one VOB file very short (like 5 minutes of play under Kaffeine). No errors or whatsoever. I don't understand, but as it is looks like another piece of crap. It does not compare in anything to the Windows version DVD Shrink. Don't waste your time testing it.
Oh boy, I'm depressed. I wish I could be a programmer so I could reverse engineer DVD Shrink and make a REAL CLONE for Linux. Are there any brave takers? I' m too old to start learning programming. :cry:

that would work, but it will not shrink the file if you want top burn to a 4.7 gig disk. Also "k3b" is a front end for many different tools including growisofs, dd, and mkisofs. Personally I would never copy dvd's because it's against the law:D , but I would use a number of different programs such as

vobcopy
k9copy
k3b
dd

but k9copy shpuld do everything you want ie: copy, shrink, create iso, it will even burn if you want to do it all in one step. You can find it here http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=23885

I've tested it on OpenSuse 10.2
and it worked for me.My homebox is SLED 10 and couldn't get it working. So at home I use the Windows version with wine. I had to untick the preview option else it kept crashing on me.

thats funny, i still use dvd decrypter and dvd shrink to copy all my movies, and it defeats all these stupid copy right protections.....maybe youre just doing it wrong

Copying ANY software, CD, DVD, Blue Ray is absolutely NOT illegal. This falls under fair use provision within the copyright laws.

Due to the fragile nature of the media (e.g. physical disks), it is well advised to copy the original disc, safely store the original disk, and only use the copy for viewing. You scratch the 'real' disk and you can be screwed. You scratch the copy and you toss it and make another copy.

I tried nearly all the available disk programs for PCLOS and it seems that none of them work - they return errors or only make 'normal' copies. I tried to get K3b to make a clone copy and it is grayed out when trying to clone a store bought DVD.
Any way to permanently force K3b to enable and use the clone setting if I want to use it?

Note: seems Windows is STILL needed for something. Gonna have to get XP out and install for a dual boot.
Please be advised that Lightscribe and Lacie do not work in Linux - they do not have options to make any adjustments. I tried it and the print was bad and very small.
Need XP for the real McCoy (Lightscribe) to make the nice effects as well.
