Linux & XP - Dual Hard Drives

Would like to pose this question to our Linux Group? Upgrading PC to have two (2) HD's. There will be One HD for Linux OS & one HD for Windows XP. What would be the preferred settings for the HDs - Master, Slave, Auto Select? Does it matter which OS be installed first? Also which on the Master setting HD and Which on the Slave setting if I go that way?

How about the CS settings for both HD's? Would like to have separate HD's for each OS and be able to pick which to boot upon startup?

That's just about the jist of it. Not all that knowledgeable with setting up but your suggestions would be very much appreciated. More than likely I may have left out some things so if there should be any questions do not hesitate to let me know. Thank you very much!

PS

I don't think the Master/Slave bit is an issue, but won't claim to know for sure.

What I do on a similar setup (3 HDs) is to have Windows on drive 1, various distros on drives 2 & 3, and installed grub (bootloader) on drive 2. I then changed the BIOS to boot off drive 2.

Do a search through this forum for how to set up grub for this, as you need to fool Windows a bit using the map command.

See post 39 on this thread for grub setup using map

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...al+boot+map%28

Seems to cover master slave issues elsewhere in thread too.

Thanks for the reply billymayday I'll check the link out and see if I can make any sense of it. Never thought of 3 HDs but interesting idea. Probably try the master/slave bit as that will be a challenge for me.

I've got 3 because I ran low on space on the second and ran low on primary partitions (I needed another primary for Solaris)
