Linux & gaming

ey.. I've been dorking around with linux for awhile now, and its going great :P I can do almost whatever i want in linux, but i have only one problem..
When playing Counter-strike with WineX i get very bad FPS. Normaly in windows i got 100fps clearly, but in linux the best i have is unstable 70-90. sometimes down on 30 :(:( and thats baaaaad.

My computer spec is:
AMD athlon t-bird 1.3ghz
512 ddr ram
GForce 4 TI4800 128mb.

Distro: Mandrake 9.1
and yeah i have installed the Nvidia drivers.. :P

well all i can say is since your using winex then your not going to do much better than your present performance....if you were using regular wine then i would recommend winex since the fps in wine is terrible as opposed to what you get in winex...i know in cs running under winex i get the same as i did in windows....all i can think of that you can do is look at the settings in your config.cfg file and check the values set for fps_max and your rate and stuff like that....other than that your going to have to stick with what you get...

70-90? When I play Day of Defeat my framerate is around 40, and I'm on Windows XP!

well. counter-strike is suppost to run under 100 fps. :P

i get around 30-60fps under windows xp.
which is fine, i dont see how you can notice any difference.

There's a huge difference in how smooth the gameplay is with different framerates. The difference is so noticeable that it's similar to changing your refresh rate on your monitor from 60hz to 100hz to get rid of the flickering. Some people say they don't notice that difference even but they obviously don't look at it enough to be able to tell. In fact the framerate difference in quake3 actually affects what jumps you can and can't do. A lot of the trick jump demos can only be performed at specific framerates. I believe 125fps and 250fps or something like that. That is why the pro gamers play with washed out graphics.

in q3 you have to have stable 125FPS to do the jumps perfectly.. i have a little unstable 125 :P its works anyway

What do you do, have your graphics lowered? Mine are set for max and such, resolution's at 1024x768, but I also only have a 64MB ATI Radeon 8500, outdated these days....

_Master_ 09-13-2003 05:03 PM

well.. you should set all gfx down, and use about 640X480 resolution. Check out www.planetquake.com and try the config generator.

right now i tryed to install q3 directly in linux. without using winex but i cant get anysound and i can not use the console. 2 of the most used things in q3 :S anyone who can help me get my freaking sound and console back?
