Question Linux 9 GUI doesn't start...

This is one strange problem i find with my shrike.
I have a C-Media sound card, pretty old but supports 4-channel audio. The corresponding driver is CMI8738. When I installed Linux 9, I was disappointed to see that it just gave me 2-channel support. In order to recognize the other two, I tried searching in multiple forums...and at last came up with a solution that involved upgrading the driver with a v2.41 driver...(I still don't know what that was!!). It contained the list of files that were to be replaced in the /etc.../drivers & /etc.../documentation folders. I but certainly took a back up. While compiling the sound driver I found soe errors and hence I restored the backup and reboot by box. Now surfaced the problem... There were actually two...
(1) This one was just an error message though it still disturbs me. I t said some thing like
"flushing ide drives: ... ide/hda seekcomplete "error...
will this affect something...
(2) The second problem is the strangest. My linux doesn't allow me to boot into it when I try to enter into it directly from the power off state of my computer. I have Windows XP also installed. Only when I boot into XP and try to restart the machine (not shutdown and power on again...) does linux start with the GUI. otherwise the screen keep on changing from the text login to the GUI and back...I mean it tries to enter into GUI mode but fails and returns back to text mode. Then it all stops and nothihng seems to happen. All the remains now is a balck screen. I press "CTRL+ALT+DEL" the computer restarts and when I enter into Linux there is no error message displayed about the abrupt shutdown (is then Linux was running perfectly in the background??? behind the balck screen). Bu the problem persists untill I choose to enter into Xp and restart again.

P.S: Sorry for the extra long description.

First, what distribution are you using? Sounds like maybe Mandrake?

The part you left out, the part after error:, is the important part. Depending on what the error is, it might affect something.

You're dual booting, how? Lilo? And your GUI works if you boot into Windows first, and then reboot into Linux?
The only thing I can think of that would do that is if Windows was doing some hardware config and leaving settings in PRAM, or something, and Linux can detect them but not configure them on its own.... but that would be just weird. And I dont' see it happening on an anywhere-near modern machine.

They say "shrike" so i am guessing they are using RedHat 9...

Maybe that would help someone get a solution because i have no idea.

It's RedHat Linux 9 (Shrike)

Yes it is RedHat 9.

the error message that I got was --- (during shutdown)
"...
shutting NFS statd: FAILED
...
flushing ide devices: hda hda: task_no_data_intr: status=0x51 {DriveReady
SeekComplete Error}
hda: task_no_data_intr: error=0x04 {DriveStatusError}
hdd
Power Down"

Is there any chance for my hard drive to have a problem?
Morover, before this problem surfaced I installed an rpm to access NTFS drives from windows XP.
I use GRUB loader.
Help me with my problem.

Unhappy More info on the problem

I also got an error recently when loading into windows XP. The BSOD screen appeared before the login screen appeared. It said there was some fault in a driver file called "...idechndr.."
Is that got anything to do with my problem in Linux???
