Linux 64bit
I don't know if this is the right place to post I apologise if it isn't but anyway I'm looking for a linux distro in 64bit for athlon 64, i've been looking everywhere and I can't find it the only one i found is Fedora core but that is unstable, does anyone know wich distro is available for free download and is in 64bits
Thanks |
Mandrake is working on a release candidate for 64
Suse has had one for a few months. It is not an .iso download. You need to do an installation by ftp. |
Gentoo compiles on your machine, so you could easily compile it for your processor.

SuSE 9 has 64 bit support

RedHat Enterprise 3 is available commercially and Fedora has a core 1 test release for AMD64 as well. I have servers running RH ENT3 on dual AMD64 Opteron boxes and it's just RH9 compiled for AMD64 for all intents and purposes. Works great as well...

Mandrake already has a 64 bit edition for the athlon but the is not downloadable that's the catch, I don't see why 32bit is downloadable and 64 bit isn't

According to an email I got from Mandrake yesterday:
"Due to requests from MandrakeClub members, MandrakeSoft is pleased to announce that ISO images of Mandrake Linux 9.2 for the AMD64 platform are now available as BitTorrent downloads to Silver level (and above) Club members." |
still I do have to pay, is not the problem the money, is just the idea behind it I mean linux was made to be free and open source but the more the time passes and the less this is true.

Free as in freedom, not free as in beer. To quote the GPL preamble
"When we speak of free software, we are referring to freedom, not price. Our General Public Licenses are designed to make sure that you have the freedom to distribute copies of free software (and charge for this service if you wish), that you receive source code or can get it if you want it, that you can change the software or use pieces of it in new free programs; and that you know you can do these things." |

i'll stick with suse anyway i never tried it maybe that's my chance |
Mandrake apparently makes more off club subscriptions than they do selling retail copies, so they try and give people lots of incentives to join. Unfortunately, free beer isn't one of them. ;)
