The problem is that there are no clear instructions on which of the nvidia drivers work with which of the kernels. Atleast, i am unable to find sources which document these. i took me a while to understand that it was my kernel version that was known to have issues with the nvidia driver i was trying to install. I guess it's just a matter of time before i know where to look for what!! But I really wonder how a fairly below average(in terms of tech know how) home pc user like my dad is ever going to use linux.

The NVidia installation program will compile a driver for your kernel. In order for it to do this, you need to install the kernel-source for the kernel if it isn't already installed.

I did that with kernel 2.6.4-52 default but it would crash at the kdm startup!!! I couldn't even see the splash.

is it a kernel version problem or is the problem with the way suse patches and modifies the kernel before shipping it?

the nvidia drivers have always been a little buggy also, on some hardware a particular kernel version and gpu would work fine, while on another system with different hardware and different gpu would refuse to work at all.

This is what i found, a security report and update to links. Do you think this applies to kernel 2.4.52default??

I had such problem. Read Section F of a FAQ in NVIDIA readme. (There is AGP issue). I´ve set it to 3 and everything is OK.
