Check your distro's CDs/website for a package containing GCC. Since you need a compiler to compile GCC, you're in a deadlock if you get the sources from the gcc site

X? What the heck? Are you running a GUI disto of linux, or are you purely in a console? If you're in a console, you can't run lineak. If you have a GUI version, something is probably mucked up with the paths. There's also a slim chance that you need the X-devel libraries, try installing those.

Just so you know, X is what produces the Linux GUI. KDE, Gnome and other desktop environments run on top of X to bring you the finished product. 99% of all Linux Distors out there come with X because 99% of them are GUI.

Good luck!
