Lindows

is lindows good ?
anyone tried it? what's the comment ?

Zerodark 03-17-2003 11:43 PM

i was going to try it before i made the full switch to Linux, but someone said it was fairly expensive so i decided to not get it and just start dual booting with Linux to see how it was,..but fortunatly i liked it and i'm running a full Linux box now :). though i would like to know if it is any good also.

I saw the screenshots in lindows.com, it is lousy,
better stick to windows or linux.

Looks like a fancy version of Linux KDE.

If I wanted/needed a laptop, I would get the $799 verson with Lindows. It is proprietary, and not as complete as a full distro, but a laptop generally is for productivity and the real work happens on Redhat/Mandrake/Debian/Suse/etc on your desktop. It is a good price and you know, ahead of time, that is is already 100% compatibe with Linux when you want to upgrade to another distro (immediatley or 2 years down the road)

On the desktop, not for me. I see it as a good first step for people who really don't know or want to know anything about a computer, just want it to work and are sick of MS.

why not just buy a laptop without lindows and install redhat? or even buy the one WITH lindows and format it???

RolledOat 03-18-2003 05:07 PM

I personally think they are selling the laptop as a loss leader to get people to sign up for the click and run and also to get market penetration. You might get more laptop with Lindows than an 'empty' one new somewhere else. :D

Also, no reason you can't just dual boot Lindows and any other Linux OS.

Isit supposed to be half each or what?

I aint seen screenshots but i am gonna have a look now and by the way some of you are talkin its a no no

the idea is that Lindows is for you if you want Linux to be like Windows. That's fine, but you can get much better than that with another distro. The truth is that almost all of the distros behave more or less like Windows. Lindows has just gone to further lenghts to clone it.
