red hat 7.1 is installed on my master hd.. hda
i have 3 partitions...
hda1 = /boot
hda5 = /
hda6 = /home
i have 2 other hd
hdb fat32 win98 istalled
hdc fat32 no os on hdc
i installed win on hdb1 first while hda was unpluged so that my comp would see it as first hd
then pluged it back in and instlled red hat 7.2 on hda... have had rh 7.1 installed b4 w/no probs but this time when comp boots i get... "LI" and nothing else happens
i can use my linux boot disk to get into linux
my question is is what can i do to get lilo to work right also if lilo is not the answer how do i uninstall it and perhaps but grub on instead
my /etc/lilo.conf is =
boot=/dev/hda1
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/message
linear
default=linux
To dual-boot Linux and Win (and do it without a floppy), I think you'll have to install lilo on the Master Boot Record of hda. Change the "boot= /dev/hda1" to "boot= /dev/hda" and re-run lilo to write the change.
Try reading the documentation installed in /usr/share/doc...lilo... (sorry can't remember the exact directory). There is a big file in there called README (I think) that tells you what fails when LILO boots. As each letter is printed, it means a part of the boot process has succeeded; so 'LI' means it failed half way through.
Sorry, don't have my system available at the moment.
LI
- The first stage boot loader was able to load the second stage boot loader, but has failed to execute it. This can either be caused by a geometry mismatch or by moving /boot/boot.b without running the map installer.
I guess that it is trying to load the message file and execute it.
If a hard drive is initially setup with an installation utility, for example the Western Digital EZ-Drive utiltity or Maxtors Max Blast, Lilo will hang at the "LI".
How was your Win98 drive setup? Was the drive pulled from another computer?
... crazy problems = many things to think about...
my HD. there are three
first was the master HD with win98
and another hd that was just fat32 (a collection of files. no os)
and a new hd with red hat 7.1 installed
now win98 hd was giving me probs installing boot magic so i said screw it and changed the jumpers on my hd and the order of my ide cables
so my lin hd was first hd and set as master
my win98 hd was second on the ide cable and set as slave
and my third hd on a diffrent ide cable (second on yhe ide cable.. the first end of the ide was conected to my cdrom... also i just left the jumper off this last hd with no os)
now originally my lin drives os had it installed on the /boot partition which is 10 megs
when lilo first didnts run (giving me the LI) i assumed i would just put the red hat 7.1 cd click upgrade and have lilo install on mbr but didnt work
i also tried using the graphical configuration in kde to do a probe of my system and let that figure out how to set up my drives
it change from having 2 diffrent boots (dos and lin) to four boots
reverand_13, could you post a copy of your lilo.conf and /etc/fstab files? Also, check to see if the boot.b file is in the /boot directory. You should put a jumper on that drive that has no os.
To this:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0
You say you have three linux partitions:
hda1 = /boot
hda5 = /
hda6 = /home
I noticed that you made no mention of a swap partition. In your fstab file, your ' / ', /boot , and /home partitions are taken care of in the first three lines. Further down this line appears: /dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0
This line is trying to mount /dev/hda6 as your swap partition. Is /dev/hda6 your ' / ' partition? Do you have a swap partition?
Also, further down is this line: /SWAP swap swap defaults 0 0
I've never seen a line like this. But it's trying to mount something called /SWAP. Did you make a swap partition and name it /SWAP? If /dev/hda6 is your ' / ' partition, then try commenting out these two lines like this: #/dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0
#/SWAP swap swap defaults 0 0
Then try booting up your computer. Don't forget to run /sbin/lilo.
