LILO: How to adding Compact speed boot up.

For no reason I was looking through arch's wiki page on lilo and it said to add compact to /etc/lilo.conf. I did and it takes the .......... away when loading the bzImage ( I think) It sped my slack boot by at least 10 seconds. But why does it speed up loading the bzImage

Code:
       compact
Tries to merge read requests for adjacent sectors into a single
read request. This drastically reduces load time and keeps the
map file smaller. Using `compact' is especially recommended when
booting using a map file on a floppy disk.
So, basically, it changes the way that lilo loads the kernel into RAM. I think it should be the default option. Another option is to use grub.
