LILO Hangs @ 'LILO'
 

I have a dual boot (Win98) AMD 233 system that I installed Mandrake 8.0. Everything worked fine... until I upgraded the CPU to a 300. When the 300 CPU is in the mobo LILO hangs, giving me the following error:

LILO 21.7

The only thing different between when it loads properly (233) and when it hangs (300) is the CPU.

Hmm. I haven't explored exactly what the LILO boot loader does (I use GRUB with the 2.4 kernel), but it would seem that LILO would do a CPU test while loading. Now, if LILO is looking for a K6 (Are you using a K7?), and it finds a K7, it might not know what to do.


Your kernel should be fine, but have you tried reinstalling your boot loader? Or, even simpler yet, to set the CPU correctly in your boot loader...

/etc/lilo.conf


I'm no expert, though..... This may not be a good solution.

Both CPUs are K6. I reset the BIOS to the correct CPU setting when I swapped chips. The strange thing is that the 300 CPU worked just fine when I only had Win 98 installed. After installing Linux I can only get LILO to fire up with the 233 CPU.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll look into /etc/lilo.conf options.
