lilo.conf and bootsplash

I have an 800x600 theme for use with bootsplash. As bootsplash only works in 16-bit, one of the things I needed to change in lilo.conf was the 'vga' parameter. I was using 800x600x64k, in which 'vga=788'. I switched it to 800x600x32k, or vga=787, and at bootup I keep getting the error "Undefined Video Mode Passed." If you press ENTER at that error, you can get a list of modes (which are in a different format that I don't understand), but it also tells you what adapter you are using. I am using the VESA VGA adapter. That's good, right? Specifically, this is a D865GBF motherboard from Intel with an Extreme Graphics 2 integrated controller (82865). If it supports 64k colors than why does it have a problem with 32k? I am using Slackware 9.1's liloconfig, which (supposedly) saves you from figuring out the vga= value. Help! Thanks in advance.
