Lilo 22.2 on print server hangs at booting the kernel.....
I have a Fiery print server which runs on a Konica Minolta photocopier.
I have checked the boot sequence and Lilo 22.2 loads, starts to boot the kernel but just hangs.
Is there a way I can rebuild the boot sequence to fix this issue? Is there any software I can run to do this for me?
Just to warn you, I am totally new to Linux but reasonably tech savvy if things are explained clearly.
Thanks in advance....
Darv

Hi Andy,
Are you asking for details of the hardware or suggesting it could be a hardware issue?
Thanks
Darv

Yes, I'm asking for hardware specs.
It sounds like you get to the LILO prompt just fine, and get the message that Linux is loading, then the freeze happens.
I've never encountered that on a PC before. Times when I screwed up the bootloader installation or configuration, I'd get "Li" and the system would freeze.
Other specs to include which might be relevant: Your method of installion, how you installed the bootloader, and Linux distribution.
I've only worked on PCs and didn't know it was even possible to install Linux onto a photocopier. So hopefully a few more details will get the troubleshooting process started.

Hi Andy,
I don't know much about the hardware or its configuration. Basically, the only way I can describe the 'Print Server' is as a small standalone PC attached to the photocopier. It functions as a management tool for rendering prints, sending and receiving emails/faxes with print jobs and scans attached and as a storage medium for 'user boxes' where documents are stored for quick recall and printing.
I have got a screenshot of the boot process which shows the PCI device listing and how far it gets in the boot process if that's any help?
Regards,
Darv

Not really. Unfortunately, a quick search did not produce any detailed information on the print server. I suggest calling the manufacture for support. Without knowing anything about the hardware it could be the hard drive or what ever it uses as the boot device has become corrupted or is failing.

Hi Michael,
Thanks for the response.
I've tried the manufacturer (Konica Minolta) and they refer me to local service agents. Local service agents in turn, refer me to ebay to buy another as this system is very much out of date - not particularly useful....
Is there any software I could download which will show me the progression through the boot process (i.e. as the Kernel is loading). Basically, I can hear the hard drive clicking away as it is presumably loading and then it all comes to a stop. I guess it could be trying to 'boot' something which is not configured correctly or not present. If I could isolate it I may be able to be a bit more specific with my request for assistance!
Any help gratefully received.
Regards,
Darv

Have a similar setup with a xerox wide format printer where I work. Did any thing happen just before it quit working, like a power outage or something similar. booting from a live Cd may let you probe around on the file system to maybe find out more about the system.

Nope. If you could configure the server to boot from a live CD (or USB if it has that capability) you can run some diagnostic tools to check out the hard drive. If not you could remove the drive and install in another computer and do the same thing with a live CD.
