Lightscribe question, is it copyrighted??

Is lightscribe technology subject to copyrights like certain media formats, such as mp3 or dvd video? I have never used my lightscribe drive and thought about playing around with it a bit.

Is there something in the ubuntu repos that supports lightscribe? A quick look didn't show me anything. If not what is the best or easiest to use thing available?

Must have been a very quick look indeed:

Lightscribe drives have been supported since 2007.

Lightscribe is a protected technology, but it's not something overly sophisticated. Check the FAQ or website of your CD/DVD burning tool for infos.

The K3b burning tool's download page has a download link to the LaCie LightScribe Labeler (see http://k3b.plainblack.com/download and http://k3b.plainblack.com/download#7...tyZ7H6bXbWiTaQ), in case that you are using K3b.

If everything else fails, you can till download the Nero burning tool's Linux version - Nero should be able to do it, though it's commercial (some people mind commercial apps).
