Judging by your kernel I'd guess you are running RH 7.3
Open/black/fluxbox or Icewm Don't install KDE Install gnome but don't use it Abiword - 2.0 is sweet, but you'll need GTK 2.0 Gnumeric Gaim Gimp Epiphany Browser (nedds Mozilla, but dont use it) Pan/gnpan Basically GTK/GTK2 apps in a lightweight window manager If possible... more ram get an AMD K6-3 550 and over clock to 600mhz+ if poss Faster harddrive With above changes in hardware, get redhat 8.0 or 9.0, then same as above. all opinion and therefore as worthless as.... a wet fart on a hot day. Thank-you and good night :D |
yes my OS is RH7.3, the problem is that i have KDE duno what version and GNOMW and blackbox.
I use blackbox in the last few months ... thats why i also ask about light software 10q |
if you've been using blackbox, stick with that. fluxbox is also really nice.
for email and browsing, try the mozilla thunderbird and firebird apps. they really rock (esp. firebird) and should be no problem since you already have the gnome/gtk libraries. i tried the "dillo" browser, but it just doesn't to have enough features at this point to recommend. i'm going to be trying something called Qweb (lost the link, sorry) that looks promising, i'm installing the qt libraries now to run it. if you have KDE it should work. ROX filer is great -- a highly recommended lightweight file manager. use a/e/xterm instead of gnome or kde consoles. vim and nano are two good terminal editors. for a graphical editor, you could use gedit. for music, xmms is the best imo, though a bit resource hungry. if you don't mind using console for that, you can also use mpg321. i wish i knew of a gnome/gtk audio player, but i don't even know if there is one. (anyone?) |
Try Lyx for word processing. It takes some adjusting to (it is a different "paradigm" of word processor from WYSIWYG ones) but is really responsive.
I echo the Rox Filer recommendation. Avoid Nautilus like herpes. |
Ya know...
You really haven't stated what it is that you want to do - software wise. That might help us be a little more specific |

rhythmbox - GTK 2.0
gstreamer xmms audacity - GTK 1.2 - great for editingt .wav files and converting to mp3 or ogg ripit ( from the command line) uses lame and cdparanoia III to rip cd's to mp3 or ogg grip - gnome cd riping utility gnome wave cleaner - cleans wav files made from vinyl or tape gtoaster lots of stuff out there :D |
oh yeah, gstreamer - forgot about that. :D rhythmbox looks pretty cool, too.

I agree about *box or IceWM, but if you find them too light, try XFce which is not a window manager but a desktop environment like KDE or GNOME, but much lighter.
Sylpheed comes recommended as a lightweight email client, or Sylpheed Claws if you need something a little more powerful. nedit is decent editor, so is ScITE. Consider using a text based one like nano, joe, jed, ee or vim. multi-aterm is a modified version of aterm with tabbed windows. GQView and feh are image viewers. irssi and BitchX are full featured IRC clients for the console. If you're a GUI junkie, XChat is popular, but there are many others.. I'm currently trying some myself. Xine, VideoLAN and mplayer are the big names in movie playback. |
