libXpm problems with mplayer-plugin

I'm trying to install the mplayer plugin for Firebird 0.7. Firebird works fine, and I got Flash installed a while ago, and it also works fine. Mplayer also works fine as a standalone app. However, when I try to install the mplayer plugin, I'm having problems with libXpm.

I downloaded the installer, and ./configure went fine. However, when I got to make, the system said:
gcc -c -g -O2 -DXP_UNIX -Iinclude -fPIC -I/usr/X11R6/include Source/ui.c
Source/ui.c:12:21: X11/xpm.h: No such file or directory
Source/ui.c:21:2: #error libXpm has not been found. Compilation cannot continue
make: *** [ui.o] Error 1
So I went into RPMdrake (I'm using Mandrake 9.1) and tried to install libXpm. Strangely, only the devel version was listed, so I downloaded an rpm for the PLD distribution and installed that. It went fine. If I do rpm -qi libxpm now, it shows that libXpm is installed. However, doing make in the mplayer-plugin directory still gives the "xpm.h not found" error. Whereis libxpm, whereis xpm and whereis xpm.h all turn up nothing.

What am I doing wrong? I'm sure it's something obvious, but I can't seem to wrap my brain around it.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
