Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I have a problem installing libsigc++, I need to install that to get Gabber to work, but after I installed it (and numerous times re-installing it), the gabber rpm and the other packages I have to install (gtkmm and gnomemm ), still keep telling me to install it?
I installed it just like other proggies and like said in the install-readme.
sh ./configure
<then a whole lot of stuff appears>
make
<more stuff>
make install
<not so much stuff>
and then it should be installed. (the readme says)
This is actually a common problem I believe. Installing a library isn't sufficient if you didn't make sure it got recognized by ldconfig. Here's the method:
#1 Find where on earth the library installed itself(/lib /usr/lib /usr/local/lib /usr/X11R6/lib etc)
#2 See if your 'make install' ran ldconfig at any point
#3 if #2 failed, make sure that the path you found in #1 is included in your /etc/ld.so.conf
#4 Run 'ldconfig' as root
Now try to compile. Imagine ldconfig as registering a DLL in windows. Generally windows would have to reboot to invoke this, but linux is friendly enough not to.
Sometimes you need to pass an option to configure when it reports a missing library that you know is installed, you do this with "./configure --with-#missing lib#=#path to missing lib#". Do "./configure -help" for more info.
Thx for the info guys, I got the libsigc++ to install properly, and also the other to. However, now the gabber-rpm tells me also to install libssl and libcrypto, I downed thos rpm's but again, they won't install either, because of some dependancies.
