Question libmtp-1.1 fails to see my device, ie mtp-detect fails - suggestions?

I have a Slackware build 13_1 with a kernel.
It came with libtmp ver 1.0.1 which has an mtp-detect that works fine with a Nikon camera I just obtained. However I did not have mtpfs, and the current sources required libmtp >= 1.1 so I rebuilt it, and then built mtpfs from current sources. All this appeared to work, but the new version of mtp-detect (now located in /usr/local/bin) doesn't see the camera while the old version (in /usr/bin/) still sees it just fine.

Any suggestions on what I might have done wrong? I have libusb-0.1.12 which should be current enough, and got no errors during build and install. Since the new library doesn't detect the camera, mtpfs can't mount it!

Another minor issue is the mtp-detect gives an error message:
'Error: Unable to open ~/.mtpz-data for reading.'
I read elsewhere that this should not affect the programs operation, but I don't know what it means nor how to eliminate it.

Thanks in advance, Will
