libirman and lirc on deb

ihave an irman irda tranciever hooked up to /dev/ttyS0 i installed the libirman-dev pkg via apt and set it up. i can get output from my remote when i # cat /dev/ttyS0, so the remote and irman are working. lirc is installed and running with the irman driver and set to /dev/ttyS0.
when i run irrecord to make a config for my remote it says
could not init hardware

i do not have a kernel module loaded because lircd is supposed to use libirman instead.

any idea what is going on here?

thanks a lot
