Lightbulb libdvdcss2 - kaffeine

Hello there lads.

I've been having this problem with libdvdcss2 to watch encrypted dvd's on my kubuntu 8.04, with kaffeine. The thing is, every time i am going to watch some movie on my laptop, i get the message that i need to install this library in order to watch the encrypted movie. Well, i have installed it as many times as i've watched a movie with kaffeine, cause every time it's like it gets uninstalled as soon as i turn off the computer or do updates, don't know, not really sure.

When i attempt to install via apt, it tells me that libdvdcss2 is the latest version, and go figure: once, i attempted to watch a movie again, just by hitting the play button, and it TOLD ME I HAD TO INSTALL IT!!!!!!!! DURING THE SAME SESSION!!!! WEIRD HUH!!????

My question here would be: how do i get libdvdcss2 to be a permanent installed library?

I've installed it with the script 'sudo /usr/share/doc/kaffeine/install-css.sh' and also using apt. Is there a way to install it so that it remains installed?

Thanks a lot!!!

Hi, have you tried deleting your ~/.css directory when it didn't work?
The only other way of installing it that comes to mind is compiling from source...

Does it behave the same way with other players (eg : xine-ui; mplayer, vlc)?

Lightbulb Try another player.

I don't know if it behaves the same way with other players. I'll do this: i will install vlc and then try again. I've heard some good things about and perhaps it's time to give it a try.

Thanks. I'll post back with the results.

If you're installing from source you might try using the --prefix=/usr option. Otherwise it defaults to /usr/local/. Which may be a temporary location on your system.

Otherwise you might try # dpkg --purge --force-all libdvdcss2 && apt-get install libdvdcss2
Probably some form of sudo to use it on ubuntu.
