Libdvdcss errors on unencrypted DVDs

I am running into the strangest problem and hopefully someone can help me here. I have a DVD recorder, a Toshiba, and it seems to work fine. I like to record onto a DVD-RW and then afterwards, if I like the result, copy it onto a more permanent disc. However, I cannot get the disc to play in the the computer normally, or to copy in a traditional way, though it seems to play in other standalone players.

If, for instance, I put the disc in and use mplayer with the command 'mplayer dvd://1' I get the following:
Playing dvd://1.
libdvdread: Could not open /dev/dvd with libdvdcss.
libdvdread: Can't open /dev/dvd for reading
Couldn't open DVD device: /dev/dvd
File not found: '1'
Failed to open dvd://1.

Exiting... (End of file)
If I try to copy with 'vobcopy -m' I get this:
path to dvd: /dev/hdc
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.9 for DVD access
libdvdread: Could not open /dev/hdc with libdvdcss.
libdvdread: Can't open /dev/hdc for reading
I can work around this in two ways, both of which I find very strange. If I want to watch the video I can mount the disc and then use the command 'mplayer -dvd-device /mnt/dvd dvd://1' and all is well. I can also use 'dd if=/dev/dvd of=title.iso' and get a copy that way. BTW, this copy will play just fine with no complaints from libdvdcss. Neither are encrypted which makes me wonder why css is an issue at all, but surely the copy is identical and so the error should be more consistent. In any case I am stumped and would hope to be able to use other tools for copying, i.e. dvdshrink so that I can edit the start and stop frames, but with the css errors nothing works. And copying to make more copies is a pain.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Patrick
