Install the kernel source for your system. You don't say what version or distro you're running, so it's hard to be more specific.

I am using open suse 10.3.1, actually in my new laptop im not getting sound, in other threads they mentioned to download latest alsa-drivers, lib and utils. After compiling these files, im getting the above mentioned problem.
My laptop is Acer aspire 4720z model, i would like to use any linux version. But I tried installing RedHad and Fedora, with that i m getting the message no drivers found. If I want to install fedora do i need to download linux driver?
ANd please suggest me which is the best distribution to have all functionalities in the laptop?..and I have to do some work by installing virtual machine in that, till nw i havent started doing anything related to virtual machine. If I want to use that, which distribution is better one?...
please help me in this regard.

It's hard to understand what you're saying, please write more clearly.

The latest version of OpenSuSE is 11, you may want to consider downloading it, since you're doing a new install. Some of the driver considerations may be addressed out of the box, without having to install anything else. If you've already installed, log in as root, and run the yast utility from the menu. You should see a software management option, which will let you install/update lots of different packages. I would try to do the installs/updates from there.

Fedora is made by RedHat, do you mean you tried RedHat enterprise, and Fedora? Both should work fine, and most modern distros will support all the hardware on your laptop without too many problems, if you have problems at all.

Hi Tbone,

Nw i wl write clearly, sorry for inconvience.

I js bought new laptop which is of model Acer Aspire 4720z, which consists of intel dual core T2390 processor, etc.

First I installed windows XP, and formatted some 30GB with ntfs file system. windows is working well.

Then I tried to install fedora7, it ws giving error message like "no drivers has been found", after that it went to next page and restarted booting..,

Later I tried same thing with Redhat enterprise linux edition4
It was also giving same error as it happend with fedora7.

After this i tried with open suse 10.3.1, it installed successfully, but that sound is not coming out. I have gone through some of posts in this linuxquestionsorg. they suggested to get latest version of alsa-drivers,alsa-lib,alsa-utils. I downloaded those things, and compiled. But during compilation it was giving error " lib/modules/2.6.22.5-31-default/source ; no such file or directory"

My question is hw to get sound in linux box?

while installing these things how to go for customized installation? and which version or distro i should use? please suggest me.

And one more thing i have to do my work on virtualmachine, after successful installation of linux i have to install virtual machine using VMware, so which distro or version supports well for this VMware or someother virtualmachine tools?

thanks and regards,

I suggested you use OpenSuSE 11 in my first post. And I also told you that to resolve the error message you're getting, you'll have to install the kernel source, and suggested a method to you of doing that. Have you done or tried any of the things suggested to you?
